Union strike puts Verizon iPhone 5 rollout in jeopardy as workers bail

Apple has taken longer than expected to give Verizon its cherished iPhone 5, and now it’s about to happen at a time when the carrier has bigger immediate issues. Unionized Verizon employees have walked off the job and are now picketing the company, which does not place Verizon’s services in immediate danger of interruption because only a fraction of the massive company’s staffers have walked off the job. However, scattered reports of acts of network sabotage on the part of individual rogue employees raises eyebrows. And more vital to the which can be expected within about a month, is the prospect of the strike spreading such that the company can’t function by the time Apple is set to serve up the fifth generation iPhone.

At present, about one-quarter of Verizon’s employees, or 45,000 out of nearly 200,000, are striking. The company’s retail stores are still open, its wireless network still functions, and no one’s call is getting dropped unless they’re in a Verizon dead spot to begin with. But the strike will go in one of two directions from here: it’ll fizzle through either lack of momentum on the part of the picketers or enough concessions from Verizon to bring enough of them back to work so as to get the same result. Or it’ll take off from here, with ever more Verizon employees joining the fray until the telecom giant does in fact have so many of its employees outside the building, rather than inside, that it no longer can function properly. Various aspects of Verizon’s business, which directly or indirectly relate to the iPhone 5, could be affected in such a scenario…

The most immediately dangerous would be Verizon’s retail stores not being able to get enough employees to work in order to keep their doors open. Past launches have shown that most day-one iPhone 5 buyers will opt for an Apple Store as opposed to a Verizon Store or an AT&T Store, but those who prefer to buy their phone from their carrier would face trouble. And those using the iPhone 5 as an opportunity to switch from AT&T to Verizon could be in larger peril, as doing so would require creating a new Verizon account which in some instances can’t be handled by Apple Stores.
