Arcana Heart 3 review - sister act
We're not sure whether developer Examu would count themselves as indie, but the mix of technical rough edges and giddy enthusiasm for the genre certainly doesn't suggest a game created for crass corporate gain. And within its clearly defined limits Arcana Heart 3 is pleasingly original in terms of both gameplay and character design. Said characters are not going to be to everyone's taste though because they're all women and, as you can probably already imagine, that means lots of distasteful anime stereotypes with multiple schoologirls and a general air of leering sexism. If you've played or watched any number of fringe Japanese games or anime you will have seen a lot worse, but it immediately makes Arcana Heart an acquired taste. It's a particular shame given how bizarre some of the concepts are, such as the girl in scuba gear that moves around in a bubble of water, which then forms giant fists to pummel the opposition. Or the primary school age girl who rides around on a hand-drawn monster she sketches on the ground before each match. By comparison the nun with bat wings and the girl in a giant robot seem positively normal. Since the series has its roots in the arcade the game has a slightly awkward five-button control system that almost certainly wouldn't have been used if it'd been a console title from the start. The basics are pretty straight forward though, with weak, medium, and heavy attacks mapped to the face buttons. There's also an unusual homing move that helps you quickly close the distance on opponent and also perform guard cancels. The fifth button deploys the 'arcana' you must choose before a bout. Not only are there 23 playable characters, but there's the same number of arcana too: as far as we can gather from the typically dotty plot a sort of magical familiar.
