Campers Get Lessons on the Side
There seems to be a specialty summer camp for every pursuit, no matter how esoteric, whether it's music, losing weight, film-making or kayaking. But Camp Leaping Horn earns the distinction of occupying a niche among specialties, catering to just a dedicated few of the estimated 300 people in the country who ride side saddle.The camp, which ends today with the Liberty Side Saddle Network's show at the U.S. Equestrian Team Foundation headquarters in Gladstone, drew 30 people from as far away as Canada, Ohio and North Carolina for five days. About 15 came with their horses, while others volunteered and audited to learn more about this graceful style of riding.
Among the instructors is Roger Philpot of Great Britain. For nine years, he served as head of that nation's Side Saddle Association, the mother ship for those who are serious about the pursuit around the world.
Since Philpot first came to the U.S. to teach 20 years ago, side saddle in this country "has come forward enormously," he said. "It's definitely going in the right direction. The biggest problem is there are so many groups, rather than working as a unit."
In Britain, where more than 1,200 people belong to the SSA, the style is different, he noted.
"You prefer your horses to go a lot longer and lower. Our horses are much more collected. Over here, there are so many different breeds, it's a minefield in some respects."
In the United Kingdom, half-draught horses, warmbloods and thoroughbreds predominate, but Philpot noted the side saddle is basically made for thoroughbreds. Since warmbloods and Arabs are more upright in the shoulder, that can make for a challenging fit.
"There aren't that many people making saddles," he pointed out, guessing the average age of a side saddle in the U.S. is probably about 70.
The camp, named after the safety pommel on a side saddle that curves down over the left leg, was started nine years ago by Shelly Liggett of Branchburg, the camp director, whose credentials included being third in the country during her side saddle show career.
