PET/CT scanning now available locally

A procedure patients once had to travel to undergo is now available at Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health-Crawfordsville.

Position emission tomography-computed tomography scanning is now being offered at the facility once a week. Each Monday, a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist comes to St. Elizabeth in a mobile unit equipped with the machinery necessary to perform PET-CT scans. The hospital has signed a lease agreement with Shared Medical Services of Cottage Grove Wis., which provides the equipment and personnel necessary for the procedures.

The medical imaging device used for the procedure takes PET and CT scans in one session. Those separate scans are then fused together to create a three-dimensional image.

“With the PET scan you’re looking at physiology, and with a CT scan you’re looking at anatomy,” said Jay Bakula, a CNMT with Shared Medical Services.

Bakula said 99 percent of the patients who undergo a PET-CT scan have cancer or are suspected to have cancer. The scan is also occasionally ordered for neurology or cardiac patients.

“This allows us to bring a service to patients that they would otherwise have to leave town for,” said St. Elizabeth radiologist James Pearce. “This is a benefit for these patients, as they are often quite sick and have other medical problems.”

Pearce said the need for the PET-CT scan to be available locally became apparent several years ago when St. Elizabeth’s Marie Canine Cancer began operating.

“We have patients who have been waiting for this to be available locally, and they are grateful the hospital has made the investment,” he said. “This is just one last little piece we didn’t have.”

Tom Peck, St. Elizabeth executive director, agreed.

“The advantage of using a mobile service is that you have so much more flexibility in what you can offer,” he said.

Claude Thorp, 64, of Lake Holiday was diagnosed in May with a rare lymphoma. On Monday, he was at St. Elizabeth for a PET-CT scan.

The mobile PET-CT unit comes to Crawfordsville for half-days each Monday. Two to four patients are scanned weekly. Bakula suspects that as PET-CT scanning becomes better understood, more doctors will order the test. “Five or six years ago,
