Hunterdon County has fewest municipal criminal cases in NJ
Hunterdon County had fewer criminal cases in municipal court than any other county in New Jersey for the last two years, according to data released this week by the judiciary of the state.
From July 2009 to June 2011, Hunterdon Municipal Courts reported 12,422 criminal cases filed with 6249 of these between July 2010 and June 2011.
Sussex, with 8,340 criminal cases last year, was the county with the least second criminal case. Essex, with 139 728 cases reported more criminal than any other county.
According to Judiciary spokesman Mike Mathis, minor crimes such as disorderly conduct, petty theft and ordinance violations and fish and game violations are included in the municipal statistics, while serious crimes such as sexual assault, homicides or robbery are excluded because these are dealt with in superior court.
About 49,930 traffic cases were filed between July 2010 and June 2011 at municipal courts in Hunterdon, an 8% increase over the number of traffic cases filed the previous year. Only Cumberland, Salem, Sussex and Warren counties reported fewer traffic cases filed in their municipal courts than Hunterdon. Hudson County had the most, with 957,383 cases.
Traffic statistics in the report include parking, driving under the influence and other moving violations, according to Mathis.
Among municipal courts in Hunterdon, Califon reported nine criminal cases, fewer than any other municipality. Raritan Township, with the largest population in the county, reported 1,364 criminal cases and 7,919 traffic cases.
Although Readington Township has the second-largest population in the county, Clinton Township had the second-highest statistics, with 990 criminal cases and 7,865 traffic cases. Readington reported 566 criminal and 1,777 traffic cases.
“I can only speculate; however, being that we are the second or third largest police department in the county, these statistics are to be expected,” Lt. Ryan Melsky of Clinton Township police said in an interview. “In addition, Clinton Township is home to three major highways, two reservoirs and numerous businesses, so it seems to me that is about where our statistics should fall.
