Auckland magicians fail to see the funny side
It's no laughing matter. Cornflake the Clown has been banished from the Auckland magic community and threatened with legal action.
The bubbly children's entertainer, real name Justin Lane, is at the centre of an online stoush after giving an award to a workmate.
Cornflake announced on his Facebook page that he had presented Auckland magician Magic Matt with Cornflake's Magic World Grand Master of Magic Award.
Professional magician Alan Watson objected, saying he held the Brotherhood of Auckland Magicians' title of Grand Master of Magic from 2006.
Mr. Watson called to say Cornflake many magicians in the fraternity were unhappy about the price because his name was too similar to that issued by his organization. Fraternity asked him to remove the price and remove it from her Facebook page.
Cornflake refused and was informed by the Commerce Commission that several complaints were filed false advertising.
Mr Watson said Cornflake price was "false and misleading" and that he was considering legal action after failing to reason with Cornflake.
"It saddens me, the whole thing. We do not do that. I like him as a person but his ethics are not right ... he's belittling magicians."
The brotherhood has banished the Takanini clown, meaning he can't attend any of its events.
Even an invitation for Cornflake to spend time at The Magic Castle, a private clubhouse for the Academy of Magical Arts in Los Angeles, had disappeared. Mr Watson, a life member of the castle, had invited him.
Cornflake said that after 11 years in the magic game he could not believe what was happening.
He had grown up watching Mr Watson perform and wanted to be just like him. He'd hoped his mentor was just pulling his leg. "To me, it's becoming a bit of a game and a bit stupid. We are all clowns, can't we just have a laugh?"
He has refused to withdraw Magic Matt's award which recognised his efforts in making up new tricks and being a great performer.
