Eastchester Eagle candidate collects 1700 sports donations to give away
EASTCHESTER — Brad McCandless was worried in the beginning that nobody would contribute to his sports equipment collection drive, and that his Eagle Scout project would be a big idea that fell flat.
But six weeks after he put out his first collection bins, his garage was filled with used basketballs, soccer shin guards, lacrosse sticks, footballs and baseballs, and he was trying to find a place to give away more than 1,700 different items to needy kids.
"Surprised doesn't even begin to cover it," said McCandless, 17, a member of Troop 353 in Eastchester. "I was looking at my garage and wondering when I was going to be able to park there again. It was full to the brim."
McCandless, who starts his senior year at Horace Mann High School this fall, has been a Boy Scout since he was 11. When he reached the second-highest level of Scouting in 10th grade, Life Rank, he began planning for his Eagle project.
"I had the idea of organizing a baseball equipment drive," McCandless said. "I've played baseball since I was 5. I had a lot of equipment myself I could donate, but then I realized that's pretty narrow and expanded it to a sports equipment drive. In January, I called organizations to see if they were interested in participating in my project. I was just hoping to help some kids. I didn't really have a number in mind, didn't expect anything big, just was hoping it wasn't going to be a failure."
He put collection baskets in local churches, sports clubs, playing fields and village and town halls at the end of May. He wrapped up his collecting at the end of the second week in July, then invited his Scout troop and other volunteers over to his house to wash and sort equipment.
That's when he counted the donations up: 1,700 separate items, including 450 baseballs, 150 baseball gloves, 100 bats, 65 footballs, 40 tennis rackets and lacrosse sticks, 150 team jerseys, plus shin guards, basketballs, soccer balls. Someone donated 20 new basketballs. Much of the equipment was used, but some wasn't, and McCandless had to give it all away.
