SFA grad designing, marking East Texas trails
With the abundance of natural resources in the region of Angelina County, Stephen F. Austin State University graduate Aaron brother is local trails more accessible to the community.
In March, the brother began a one-year internship that was created through a Conservation Fund grant and the Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Its objective is to design and mark trails for hikers, cyclists, kayakers and riders and to make these trails easily accessible through a new website visitlufkin.com.
Originally from Austin, the brother graduated from SFA with a degree in forestry.He said he had picked up a book on hiking trails in Texas and was surprised by the lack of information available in East Texas.
"I was looking through and there are not many in East Texas there are about, especially Angelina County," Bishop said. "It blew my mind because there is so much to do here in the open sage. Most of my work is to promote the trails in the region."
Within 50 mile, Angelina County is located in the center of three national forests, Lake Sam Rayburn and areas of wildlife management, including many opportunities for people to get out and enjoy nature.
"What I'm trying to do is put Lufkin on the map," Brother said. "I try to create maps, brochures and information packets so that we can offer visitors the information they need to enjoy all the natural areas we have around our county."
Since March, the brother, an outdoorsman, has mapped all the paths of the city using a backpack GPS sophisticated as points plots that walking and cycling areas. He also mapped several bike routes in the county, with the help of Bike Club Angelina County. These maps were downloaded to visitlufkin.com, under the Playback tab, and can be downloaded in PDF format for others to use. The site also provides turn-by-turn directions and a brief description of the track. So far he has mapped about 25 tracks.
Some of these trails include Lufkin Kit McConnico (for hiking and biking), Azalea Trail, Angelina College Trail and the Texas Forestry Museum Trail.
